Hello all. Just acquired a Suzuki gt 250 project, had one as my first bike after passing my test a good few years ago mostly complete. However the fella I had it off had the rolling chassis and sourced a later engine. Unfortunately the only paperwork I have is a receipt and the frame number no reg number. Is there anyway of getting the reg number just using this or is a cade of finding a frame with a V5.

Re: Hello everybody
could be wrong BUT ... try ringing the DVLA and asking if the frame No is on their system. I had a nice chat with a advisor about a Honda 400 I have she trawled the data and found what we needed to know

Re: Hello everybody
Hi Fastfred,
If your sure that it was registered in the UK previously, you can contact DVLA about this matter using their email service as well and they'll get back to you. If they can't sort it out by email then they'll probably make you submit a paper application. This is because some registrations which haven't been taxed for many years were removed from the main database and stored separately.
If the registration linked to the frame number is still on the system then they might be able to resolve the matter via email and it should be fairly straightforward. They still might make you submit a paper application though depending on the circumstances.
If the registration is inactive, then they will probably make you submit a V62 form (to apply for a V5) and a cheque for £25. In addition to this, submit a V890 SORN form and a cover note explaining the situation. They will most likely send you a reply slip asking for details about the vehicle and photos to prove the vehicle still exists + frame number. If the engine is a replacement then they may ask you for a receipt for the engine. If they're happy with everything then they should issue you with a V5.
If they can't find it then the vehicle would need to be registered as a used vehicle but the engine number might cause a problem with getting a dating certificate but I am not certain about this. If this scenario was the outcome then you could consider other options.
This is all very general and I'm not sure what they will say for your specific case but once you contact DVLA, it should be clearer. Hope this helps.

Re: Hello everybody
I spoke to the DVLA and advised me to fill in a v62 with the frame number and also a sorn declaration and a cover letter and the £25 fee, they said if its on the system I should get a V5
Had a result today the person I had the bike off posted a workshop manual and the Green part of the V5 with the reg number on it so hopefully
Fingers crossed
