This seems a very useful mod. to do... anyone know a supplier of the correct type of block connectors please?. I think I'll convert mine as well using Richard's diagram.. what could possibly go wrong!

Is this mod recommended even if an electronic ignition is installed?

Absolutely. It reduces load across the ignition switches.

I removed the tank today and without the headlight on, I measured 12.8V at the battery and 11.8V at the coils. Is the relay mod still worth doing with only a 1V drop? I’d image the drop could be quite a bit more with the headlight on.

Y E S .

Just do it already... :)

When the switches get older or corroded even slightly, that voltage will drop and continue to deteriorate. Baz was spot on when he recommended the relay mod. I cannot imagine having an old bike without a relay now.

Ok will do. Need to go the electronics store to buy some connectors to save cutting the wiring harness.

Just remember that (say) 12 volts (coil) divided by (say), 13 volts battery voltage gives a 92% drop in ht volts at the plugs from 12000v to 'only' a tad of 11000 volts which gives a weaker spark, worse combustion, less power, worse fuel mileage and possibly more poorly polar bears.
Your choice. :?
My choice - clean everything regularly, regular plug changes, regular maintenance, resistor free plug caps, and ride it like you stole it.
I like my mindset. Yours is up to you, whether you prefer riding, faffing or farting about. :tw

Going to do what you’re doing Allan. Plugs and caps ordered on the weekend.
